Churches around the globe hold services marking Reformation Day

To mark the 20th anniversary of the landmark ecumenical document, the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ), Catholic and Lutheran leaders celebrated together in Geneva’s St Pierre Cathedral in June with representatives of Anglican, Methodist and Reformed churches who have also affirmed the historic agreement. For their shared worship service, they used an ecumenical liturgy, available on-line in four languages, which all Lutheran churches are encouraged to adapt for their own needs as they mark Reformation Day.

Reformation Day 2020

Churches worldwide mark Reformation anniversary

On 31 October, Lutherans around the globe commemorate the anniversary of the Reformation. To mark the occasion this year, LWF’s Communion Office is providing new multi-lingual worship materials and other online resources to help churches pray and reflect together on the meaning of Reformation in our contemporary context. These include:

  • During the week leading up to 31 October, we will publish videos with reflections from all seven LWF regions on what it means to be Lutheran in different countries and cultures.
  • On 27 October, we explore how churches can engage better with media through a webinar highlighting the ongoing concern for literacy and education to combat fake news and misleading theologies.

On Reformation day, an anniversary edition of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ) will be published, showcasing plans for future joint action among the five global communions that have endorsed this landmark ecumenical document.

“One Body, One Spirit, One Hope” Reformation Day Global Prayer

LWF Youth lead global Reformation prayer

In this time of physical distancing, the Lutheran World Federation will gather online to unite in prayer on Reformation Day 2020. LWF Youth from around the world will lead our liturgy that focuses on baptism, which reconciles us to God and all creation. By water and Word, the one Spirit unites us through time and space into one body of Christ, and enlightens us with one hope to live our vocation in trust and courage. We will hear messages of hope from around the world and dance to music by Grupo Anima, theology students at Faculdades EST, Brazil.
