Reflection for World Humanitarian Day 2014

“Not Enough to Call Them Heroes.”

In this video for World Humanitarian Day 2014, LWF Department for World Service Director Rev. Eberhard Hitzler reflects on the theme for the day, “The World Needs More Humanitarian Heroes.”

Indeed, LWF and other humanitarian staff are heroes who put the needs of the most needy over and above their own comfort.

But the world needs these heroes alive and the total lack of respect for international humanitarian law by some parties in conflicts means that humanitarian workers risk paying the ultimate price for their commitment.

On World Humanitarian Day 2014, Hitzler calls on the international community to speak out clearly and loudly against the targeted killing of aid workers and civilians.
