“Bring an end to violence. Restore hope”

(LWI) - One year has passed since violence erupted in the Middle East, following the 7 October 2023 attack by Hamas and the subsequent response by Israel. The situation has since escalated into the worst violence and suffering the region has seen in recent history.

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) calls for a worldwide prayer for peace and solidarity with the churches and people in the Holy Land and the entire Middle East.

From the outset, LWF has consistently advocated for peace and de-escalation. “LWF has condemned the violence of Hamas as well as the civilian deaths in Gaza due to Israel’s response and the destruction of vital infrastructure, which has displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, leading to untold suffering,” says LWF General Secretary Rev. Dr Anne Burghardt.

“One year on,” she continues, “we see even further escalation of the war, and we are inviting people and churches across the world to join us in prayer and solidarity.”

A short prayer is provided below to encourage reflection and a collective call for peace during this challenging time.

A prayer for peace

God of justice, peace, and reconciliation. After a year of escalated conflict in the Middle East, we stand before you, lamenting immense suffering, loss of life, and injustice.

We are a part of one human family, but daily we experience brokenness.

Gracious God, change hearts and minds, replace suspicion with respect for human dignity, replace fear with love for the neighbor. Bring an end to violence and the war in the Holy Land and the Middle East. Restore hope, O God.

We pray that hostages are released, that civilians are protected, that human rights are respected, that humanitarian workers are granted safe access to offer aid. We pray that leaders have the wisdom and courage to choose peace rather than war. May justice again flourish for the Palestinian people. Open paths to a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live together in safety and peace.

Gracious God, bring peace to our conflicted world, in other countries experiencing tension and war, in Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, and in so many other places.

Merciful God, may transformative peace prevail, that peoples and nations are reconciled, that communities live together in the abundance of life you wish for all.
