Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025 looks forward to celebrations marking the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea

2025 is an important anniversary for the majority of the Christian world as many churches prepare to mark 1,700 years since the first Ecumenical Council met in Nicaea, near Constantinople, in 325 CE. The anniversary offers a unique opportunity to celebrate our common faith as expressed in the initial creed that was then expanded to become the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed in 381.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, held in the northern hemisphere in January and around Pentecost in many churches of the global south, invites believers to draw deeply on this shared Trinitarian heritage. The texts for the week are taken from Jesus’ conversation with Martha in Bethany following the death of her brother Lazarus [John 11:17-27]

The prayers and reflections were prepared by the sisters and brothers of the ecumenical community of Bose in northern Italy. The resources, available in seven languages, are jointly published by the World Council of Churches and the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity.

The event will be held in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Arabic.
