The Asia Pre-Assembly, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, will provide the opportunity for the member churches of the region to come together to prepare for the LWF Assembly.

The pre-assembly allows the 101 delegates from the 54 member churches representing close to 11 million Lutherans spread across Asia, to familiarize themselves with the theme of the Assembly, and to respond to the issues and concerns from the perspective of the Asian churches. In addition, delegates will seek to contribute to the document, Self-Understanding of the Lutheran Communion, as well as build relationships among themselves. The pre-assembly will propose a set of leaders to represent Asia in the new LWF Council.

Looking towards 500 years of the Reformation, the Asian churches will also reflect on their Lutheran identity, review the pilgrimage from the last Assembly to date, look at the ways in which the churches have witnessed the gospel in diverse contexts, and envision how to keep fulfilling God’s mission in society.

The pre-assembly will be preceded by the women’s and youth meetings, as well as an open forum on the Sustainable Development Goals. Both the President and General Secretary of the LWF will attend.
