Together with other humanitarian organizations, LWF observes World Humanitarian Day on 19 August 2019.

11 October is the International Day of the Girl.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had serious consequences for children worldwide, but especially for girls. School closures put girls at risk to not only lose out on education temporarily, but to drop out entirely, removing the opportunity for them to determine their own future. At the same time, the protection mechanisms which work in school are no longer in place. LWF country programs in the past months have noted an increase in sexual and gender-based violence, early marriage and teen pregnancies which will likely become worse.

The 12th of August was declared the International Youth Day by the United Nations in 2000.

Ending Sexual and Gender Based Violence

The LWF supports the 16 Days of Activism for Ending Violence against Women and Children campaign, urging all member churches and country programs to work for a more just and equal world.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness and promote action to transform the power structures and discriminatory norms that enable sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination.

Nearly 20 years ago, on 31 October 1999, representatives of the LWF and the Catholic Church signed the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ) in Augsburg, Germany. With the JDDJ, Lutherans and Catholics had identified a differentiated consensus on the question that had deeply divided the church in the West. This consensus provided the grounds to mutually declare that condemnations expressed in the past do not apply anymore.
