Theme: Theology

Under this theme, you will find training materials and resources surrounding Theology. You will learn more about diverse areas of theology including theology in the public space, Lutheran theological perspectives, ecumenical and interfaith contexts around the communion. These modules and resources are aimed for member churches, theological schools, parishes or individuals who want to deepen their knowledge and faith.

Being Lutheran: Lutheran identities

Introduction: In this course, we explore themes that emerged from a 2019 consultation in Addis Ababa on Lutheran identities, and explore the creative, vibrant, life-giving diversity of what it means to be Lutheran today in different contexts around the LWF Communion. Each module includes a video of a webinar that explores the topic. Speakers present each topic, and question and answers follow. Target audience: The course is aimed at all youth to adult members of LWF member churches, for use in a seminar, as part of a confirmation curriculum or a Christian Education course on Lutheranism in a congregation or classroom.

Introduction to Lutheran Theology

This nine-module course in Lutheran theology was developed by an international working group of theologians in conjunction with LWF’s Department for Theology, Mission and Justice. Each module includes a video lecture, guided readings and discussion questions to guide group reflections. Target audience: The course is aimed at undergraduate students, and pastors or church workers who are interested in reflecting on different aspects of Lutheran theology.

Public Theology Open-Access Resources

The lecture series in the open-access resource revolves around the topic of public theology and is the result of cooperation between the Berlin Center for Public Theology in Germany, the Beyers Naudé Center for Public Theology in South Africa, and the Lutheran World Federation. It brings together leading experts from all over the world delivering lectures on different aspects of public theology. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in various contexts, each lecture contains a presentation (both in video and audio formats) with accompanying slides, additional study material and supplementary reading. The lecture series was first offered to graduate students in Berlin and Stellenbosch; the series is part of the Lutheran World Federation learning modules but is also designed to benefit all students in areas where study material is hard to access and travel is difficult due to lack of funds or opportunities.
