Visions for transformative climate action

Reaching the time of what should have been the COP26 in Glasgow, the final session offers a space for dialogue on faith-based climate action. Stories of hope in action from faith communities around the world are shared and reflected on. The session offers interactive opportunities for participants, facilitating connections and raising motivation for the year ahead.

ACT Alliance, Lutheran World Federation and World Council of Churches participants at COP25 illustrate the lack of balance in finance of the global climate response, where most of the finance is put into mitigation, some into adaptation, but very little into loss and damage, even though “that's where the people are.” They chanted: “What do we want? – Climate justice. When do we want it? – Now!

The second of three online sessions brings together representatives from the scientific, policy and faith communities engaged in climate change. It is an interdisciplinary discussion on the agenda for COP26 and what this means for climate action now.

The first of three online sessions provide a space to explore the response offered by different faith traditions to the current climate crisis and COVID-19. The discussion focuses on how these perspectives might help to navigate through this precarious moment.

Online prayer for climate justice

A global service to mark climate advocacy leading up to COP26

Join a short service of prayer, reflection, and action on climate justice with friends from around the world.

In November, world leaders should have been gathering in Glasgow, United Kingdom, for COP26. The UN climate conference was postponed until November 2021. To mark the original conference dates and reflect on the role of faith actors in pushing for more ambitious climate action in the coming year, we will gather from all over the world for a short service of prayer and solidarity.

Speakers from every continent will lead prayers and share experiences of the struggle for climate justice. Join us at the start of this year of prayer and action.

COP26: Together for the planet

Interfaith voices for more ambitious climate action

In the coming months before the next meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP) to the Paris Agreement in November, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) as a member of the Interfaith Liaison Committee to UNFCCC (ILC) seeks to profile its advocacy for climate justice and care for creation.

ILC partners come from a range of contexts, regions, and beliefs. They all contribute to the climate discussions from value-based and ethical perspectives of different traditions. They aim to offer support to negotiations and encourage decision-makers to take the brave steps needed to create a resilient future.

Since COP26 was postponed by one year, pivotal decisions about Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that the Paris Agreement's parties should have made are overdue.

The webinar will address the following topics:

  • NDCs today: Summary of the current NDC status, based on the report from UNFCCC from 28 February. Highlighting the gap between what is pledged and what is needed to reach the goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celcius.
  • Witness of climate change: What are the consequences for the most vulnerable to climate change with the course we are following today? Voices from the most vulnerable regions.
  • Building trust and advocating for a just transition: What does advocacy for COP26 entail and what is the message to decision-makers from a faith-based perspective?

Raise your voice in faith for climate justice

How you can influence COP26 and your nation’s climate change commitments

One of the key pillars for mobilizing international commitment to address climate change within the Paris Agreement is the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

NDCs enable each country to create a unique set of commitments to mitigate climate change. They measure the progress made to achieve these commitments and include an obligation to review achievements every five years.

The coming months before COP26 are critical for making progress on climate policy and action. The numerous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic should not make us forget the climate crisis and its far-reaching consequences.

The review process of the NDCs provides an opportunity for people of faith to contribute to effective change and advocate for the care for creation.

The webinar will include an exchange among the participants to discuss opportunities for taking advocacy actions to raise their country’s commitments to the NDCs. Also, participants will have the chance to get acquainted with and discuss case studies of people who have acted on NDCs in different countries.

The Lutheran World Federation and ACT Alliance are jointly inviting climate advocates, specifically from the South and Central American regions, to this online series.

It focuses on the intersection between climate resilience, the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), and the COVID-19 pandemic on the climate agenda.

Representatives from the sciences, politics, and faith communities committed to climate action contribute to the dialogues.

Session 1 deals with the status of climate ambition towards COP26.
