LWF Statement

No safe place to go

For immediate release, 17 September 2025

The Lutheran World Federation expresses its deep alarm and grave concern at the escalating Israeli military operations in Gaza City. The intensification of attacks and advancement into densely populated areas, places already vulnerable civilians at unprecedented risk. There is no safe place to go. It is appalling to witness hundreds of thousands of people forced out of Gaza city with nowhere to shelter and no access to bare necessities

Among those displaced are LWF staff and colleagues from the Al Ahli hospital.

Despite repeated warnings from the United Nations and other international organizations, the government of Israel continues to disregard appeals to protect civilians. We fear for the lives, dignity, and future of the Palestinian people who continue to endure immense suffering, displacement, and destruction.

The LWF condemns the use of military force in ways that endanger civilian populations and violate international humanitarian law. The human cost of this violence and the implications it carries for the future of the Palestinian people are unacceptable.

As a global communion of churches, rooted in Christ’s call for justice, peace, and the protection of human life, we once again raise our voice in the face of this devastation.

We urgently call upon the international community, particularly the allies and partners of Israel, to use their influence to immediately halt this military offensive in Gaza city. Silence and inaction in the face of these atrocities make governments and institutions complicit in the continued bloodshed.

Now is the time for courageous intervention. We demand

  • an immediate end to indiscriminate attacks,
  • guaranteed humanitarian access,
  • tireless work for a ceasefire and peace with justice and accountability.

The Lutheran World Federation stands in solidarity with the people of Gaza and the West Bank. They are paying the heaviest price for this war.

Our prayers remain with our Palestinian brothers and sisters, and our commitment is to continue walking with them in their struggle for justice, dignity, and peace.
