Lutheran Church of Myanmar marks silver jubilee with thanksgiving for witness and growth

(LWI) - In its recent silver jubilee celebrations, the Lutheran Church of Myanmar (LCM) underlined the spirit of gratitude and hope that has sustained its 25 years of witness and service in the country.

LCM President Rev. Martin Lalthangliana reflected on the anniversary theme, “God is Good and His Steadfast Love Endures Forever (Psalm 100:5).” The church also published a special anniversary booklet, featuring testimonies of faith and mission from its congregations across the country. A worship on 1 November brought together pastors, members, and partner churches to thank God and pray for the future of the church in the predominantly Buddhist nation.

Since its founding in January 2000, the LCM has grown steadily, and it currently has 2,000 members. There are 17 pastors serving its 10 congregations and three preaching stations. It is one of four churches in the country that are members of The Lutheran World Federation (LWF). They collaborate through the Federation of Lutheran Churches in Myanmar.

“The LCM has played a vital role in nurturing peace, dignity, and justice—values that resonate deeply with our shared mission, as expressed in the LWF strategy,” Rev. Dr Rospita Siahaan, LWF Regional Secretary for Asia said in her congratulatory message. Sharing this hope empowers churches and people to make a positive difference in the world, she noted.

As you mark this jubilee, may it be not only a celebration of God’s steadfast love in the past and in the present, but also a renewal of your mission for the years ahead

“As you mark this jubilee, may it be not only a celebration of God’s steadfast love in the past and in the present, but also a renewal of your mission for the years ahead,” she added.

Diverse and impactful ministries

LCM’s ministries are wide-ranging, encompassing youth programs, women’s fellowship, Sunday school, theological education, and community support activities. The church is also actively involved in social welfare and diaconal initiatives, extending help to those affected by natural disasters and supporting the education of children from marginalized families.

Despite ongoing concerns posed by political challenges, economic hardship, and limited resources, the LCM continues to stand firm in faith. Through prayer, mutual support, and partnerships with both local and international churches, it remains committed to sustaining ministry and bringing hope to its communities.

Women play an active and vital role in various ministries and leadership activities within the church, contributing significantly to its growth and witness.
