Shaping the LWF’s engagement with COP30 from national-level advocacy to global mobilization

(LWI) - The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) will participate in the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), taking place from 10 to 21 November 2025 in Belém do Pará, Brazil, together with other faith-based partner organizations. The LWF invites nominations from its global communion to form a diverse and dynamic delegation to engage in climate advocacy at this international event.

COP30 will offer both in-person and online participation, enabling broad engagement from across the LWF’s member churches. The deadline for nominations is 31 August 2025.

“Lutheran churches contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation among the most vulnerable at the local and national levels,” says Elena Cedillo, LWF’s Program Executive for Climate Justice. “As a communion of churches, our engagement is rooted in the spiritual and theological perspectives of the Lutheran tradition. Our faith motivates us to cultivate an ecological sense of being human and a vocation to care for the well-being of all creation,” she says.

As the world marks 10 years since the Paris Agreement, the LWF is calling for urgent action to tackle the climate crisis.

Call for nominations

The LWF is calling on all member churches to nominate one delegate each, with a strong emphasis on youth leadership. Nominees should ideally have prior experience or understanding of climate justice and must be endorsed by the leadership of their respective churches.

Selected delegates will represent the LWF as a collective voice, not individual churches, and will play a key role in shaping the communion’s engagement with COP30 from national-level advocacy to global mobilization.

Delegate participation

Delegates will be chosen for in-person or online participation, depending on the number of accreditations granted by the organizers. All nominees will be invited to join the LWF Climate Justice Capacity-Building Program, which includes workshops, preparatory sessions, and participation in regional Climate Justice Forums.

LWF delegates are expected to engage in ongoing advocacy before, during, and after COP30.

Activities and engagement

Before COP30, delegates will study LWF’s climate justice work and national climate commitments, participate in preparatory meetings and regional forums, and build networks with civil society and national delegations.

During COP30, delegates will attend key sessions and side events, representing the LWF, engage in daily devotionals and delegation meetings, and share insights through blogs and videos.

After COP30, delegates will submit reports to the LWF and their churches and continue advocacy efforts at national and regional levels.

All nominations must be endorsed by the leadership of the respective LWF member church.
