To strengthen their involvement in working for human rights and social and economic justice, the LWF provides capacity-building opportunities for member church representatives. These opportunities include human rights training workshops (and small-scale support for member churches' own training programs in this area), and an annual human rights training internship.

Human Rights Training Workshops

Normally organized on a regional basis, these workshops are opportunities for member church representatives to receive detailed training on the principles of human rights and on practical methodologies of human rights work. Typically, the program of such workshops includes:

  • A presentation and discussion on the "Theological Imperatives for Human Rights"

  • A presentation on "Human Rights on the Ecumenical Agenda"

  • A presentation and discussion on the specific theme identified for each workshop

  • An in-depth presentation on human rights principles, instruments and mechanisms (at international and regional levels)

  • Group work on human rights case studies

  • A site visit to local human rights practitioners

Small-scale support for member churches' capacity-building initiatives

The LWF Office for International Affairs and Human Rights (OIAHR) maintains a small fund to support the local capacity-building initiatives of member churches in relation to international affairs and human rights issues.

For more information concerning the availability of this funding, please contact via e-mail Mr Peter Prove, or via fax no. +41/22-791 6630.

Annual human rights training internship

Each year, OIAHR enables at least one member church representative to undertake an intensive human rights training course provided by the International Service for Human Rights in Geneva in conjunction with the annual session of the United Nations Commission for Human Rights (which holds an annual six-week session in March/April).

Recipients of this internship are expected to become "multipliers" of this training, and to equip others in their churches and societies with the knowledge and skills they acquire.
