A Global Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Campaign against HIV/AIDS was officially launched 6 May 2002 in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
The campaign process, inaugurated at the end of a five-day Pan-African Lutheran church leadership consultation on HIV/AIDS challenges, also recognized commitments to break the silence on the disease. The campaign includes an LWF action plan on HIV/AIDS, "Compassion, Conversion, Care: Responding as Churches to the HIV/AIDS Pandemic," aimed at engaging LWF member churches in open discussion about the disease, and promoting their active participation.
"Breaking the Silence," the church leaders' commitments, include among other issues, confession and acknowledgment that although the churches are currently engaged in providing HIV/AIDS care and support, the leadership has too often contributed to stigmatization and discrimination. More...
The LWF European Church Leadership Consultation on HIV/AIDS
The LWF European Church Leadership Consultation on HIV/AIDS took place 20-25 April 2004 in Odessa, Ukraine. It brought together around 40 participants from diverse backgrounds and leadership responsibilities in the LWF's European member churches. The Mayor of Odessa welcomed the conference to the city and expressed hope for collaboration between the local churches and government in addressing HIV/AIDS. The meeting benefited from the experiences of other partners including the All-Ukrainian Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS Kiev office, and the AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW), who apart from participating assisted in preparing the conference and organizing a photo exhibition mounted by people living with HIV/AIDS. The challenges of HIV/AIDS in Europe were discussed, and emphasis was placed on how the Church can respond with compassion as it witnesses to communities, some of which are at the margins of society. The message was to reach out so that we can all be bound together as the one Body of Christ.
